Holidays to Los Gigantes
Los Gigantes in Tenerife
Overview
Named after the colossal basalt cliffs that tower up to 600 metres above the Atlantic, Los Gigantes is one of Tenerife's most awe-inspiring destinations. Located on the sun-drenched western coast, this resort offers a more tranquil and dramatic alternative to the bustling southern hubs. The town is built into the hillside, with winding streets leading down to a charming marina and a small, volcanic sand beach. Los Gigantes has managed to retain much of its original character, avoiding the high-rise development found elsewhere on the island. It is a place where the scale of nature dominates the landscape, providing a breathtaking backdrop for a relaxing holiday. Whether you are sipping a coffee at the harbour or marveling at the cliffs from a boat, the sense of grandeur is ever-present in this corner of Tenerife.
Beaches & nature
The star of the show is undoubtedly the Acantilados de los Gigantes (Cliffs of the Giants). These vertical rock walls plunge directly into the ocean and are best appreciated from the water. At their base lies Playa de los Guíos, a beautiful beach of soft, black volcanic sand. While small, it offers some of the most dramatic swimming views in the Canary Islands. The waters here are remarkably clear and calm, protected by the massive cliffs and the harbour wall. For a different swimming experience, the Isla Cangrejo natural pool provides a sheltered spot to enjoy the sea, where waves crash against the outer walls while you swim in calm, saltwater basins. The surrounding area is part of a Teno Rural Park, a rugged volcanic landscape that offers some of the island's most spectacular hiking trails and diverse flora.
Things to do
Boat excursions are the most popular activity in Los Gigantes, departing daily from the marina. These trips offer the chance to see the cliffs up close and are world-renowned for dolphin and whale watching. The deep waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to resident colonies of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. For the more adventurous, a hike through the nearby Masca Ravine is a legendary Tenerife experience, typically ending with a boat ride back to Los Gigantes harbour. Diving and snorkelling are also excellent here, with the underwater volcanic topography mirroring the drama of the cliffs above. Within the town, the Lido de los Gigantes offers a stylish seawater pool complex with panoramic views. For a change of pace, the neighbouring village of Santiago del Teide offers a glimpse into traditional Canarian life and serves as a gateway to the mountains.
Eating & nightlife
Dining in Los Gigantes is a relaxed affair, with many establishments focusing on fresh, local ingredients and stunning views. The marina area is lined with restaurants where you can enjoy the "catch of the day" while watching the yachts bob in the harbour. Traditional Canarian dishes like conejo en salmorejo (rabbit stew) and papas arrugadas with mojo sauce are staples in the local guachinches and family-run tavernas. The nightlife is sophisticated and low-key, centered around sunset cocktails and live music in hotel lounges or waterfront bars. You won't find the neon-lit clubs of Playa de las Américas here; instead, the evening's entertainment is often a quiet dinner followed by a stroll along the promenade, enjoying the cool Atlantic breeze and the sound of the waves.
Getting around
Los Gigantes is well-connected but its hilly terrain means that walking can be a bit of a workout. The town is approximately 45 minutes from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) by car or taxi. Public buses (guaguas) operated by TITSA run regular services to Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz. For exploring the rugged Teno mountains or visiting the historic town of Garachico on the north coast, hiring a car is highly recommended. Parking can be challenging in the narrow streets near the harbour, so look for accommodation with dedicated parking if you plan to drive. Within the resort, taxis are readily available and affordable for shorter trips between the harbour and the upper parts of the town.
When to go
Los Gigantes enjoys one of the best climates in the world, with over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. Thanks to its position on the west coast, it is sheltered from the prevailing trade winds, often making it several degrees warmer and significantly calmer than the north or even the east of the island. Winter is a popular time for visitors from northern Europe, with temperatures rarely dipping below 18°C. Spring and autumn offer perfect conditions for hiking and outdoor activities. Summer brings hotter temperatures, perfect for water sports and boat trips, though the town remains pleasantly breezy. If you visit in February, you might catch the local carnival celebrations, a vibrant and colourful event that brings the community together in true Canarian style.
