Holidays to Playa de las Américas
Playa de las Américas in Tenerife
Overview
Playa de las Américas is the high-energy, neon-lit heart of southern Tenerife, world-renowned as the island's premier party destination and a hub for sun-seekers from across the globe. Purpose-built in the 1960s, the resort has evolved into a vast, vibrant playground that stretches along the south-western coast, merging seamlessly with Los Cristianos to the east and Costa Adeje to the west. While its legendary nightlife often takes centre stage, the resort also offers a surprisingly diverse range of experiences: broad, sandy beaches, excellent surfing breaks, world-class shopping, and family-friendly entertainment. The "Golden Mile" (Milla de Oro) represents the resort's sophisticated side, with designer boutiques, musical fountains, and upmarket restaurants, while the "Veronicas" strip remains the epicentre of its legendary late-night scene. Playa de las Américas is a place that never truly sleeps, offering a holiday experience that is as intense or as relaxed as you choose to make it.
Beaches & nature
The resort's coastline is a series of man-made and natural beaches, each with its own character. Playa de Troya and Playa de las Américas are the most central, offering wide stretches of soft sand and calm waters protected by breakwaters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. For surfers, Playa de la Izquierda (The Left) is world-famous, offering a powerful, hollow wave that draws experts from across Europe. The Playa del Camisón is a more sheltered, family-friendly cove located near the Golden Mile, with imported golden sand and crystal-clear water. While the resort itself is highly developed, the natural world is never far away; the dramatic cliffs of Los Gigantes and the volcanic moonscapes of Mount Teide are easily accessible for day trips. The coastal waters are also home to a permanent population of pilot whales and dolphins, with boat tours departing daily from the nearby Puerto Colón.
Things to do
Activities in Playa de las Américas range from high-adrenaline watersports to sophisticated cultural experiences. Surfing and bodyboarding are huge here, with numerous schools offering lessons for all levels along the "Spanish Left" break. For families, the nearby Siam Park in Costa Adeje provides a world-class day out, while the resort's own mini-golf courses and amusement arcades keep younger visitors entertained. Shopping is a major draw, particularly along the Milla de Oro, where you'll find the Safari and Oasis shopping centres housing international brands and luxury boutiques. The Pirámide de Arona auditorium hosts spectacular Spanish dance and flamenco performances. As evening falls, the musical fountains at the Safari Centre provide a free and popular light-and-sound show. For those seeking adventure, paragliding from the mountains above Adeje offers a spectacular bird's-eye view of the entire coastline before landing on the beach.
Eating & nightlife
The dining scene in Playa de las Américas is as varied as its visitors, offering everything from fast-food staples to gourmet international cuisine. The Golden Mile is the place for high-quality dining, with a wide range of restaurants specializing in Italian, Asian, and contemporary Spanish food. For traditional Canarian flavours, venture into the smaller side streets or head towards the harbor in Los Cristianos. Nightlife is, of course, the resort's calling card. The Veronicas strip and the Starco area are legendary for their high concentration of bars and clubs that stay open until dawn, catering mainly to a younger crowd. For a more relaxed evening, the beach clubs at Playa de las Vistas and the cocktail lounges along the Golden Mile offer a more sophisticated atmosphere with live DJs and sunset views.
Getting around
Playa de las Américas is approximately 15-20 minutes from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) via the TF-1 motorway. The resort is extremely walkable, with a continuous pedestrianised promenade that links it to Los Cristianos to the east and Costa Adeje to the west. Public buses (guaguas) operated by TITSA provide frequent and reliable services to all major points on the island, including the capital Santa Cruz. Taxis are plentiful and available 24/7 at designated ranks throughout the resort. Car hire is a popular option for those wanting to explore the Teide National Park or the more remote northern parts of the island, with numerous agencies located within the resort.
When to go
Playa de las Américas is a year-round destination, enjoying Tenerife's stable subtropical climate with average temperatures ranging from 18°C in winter to 28°C in summer. Winter is the peak season for northern European visitors escaping the cold, making the resort feel busy and festive. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) offer arguably the best balance of warm weather and more manageable crowds. Summer is popular with Spanish families and younger travellers, with the sea reaching its warmest temperatures. Surfers will find the best and most consistent swells from October to March, while those seeking the calmest waters for swimming should aim for the summer months.
