Holidays to Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos in Tenerife

Overview

Los Cristianos is the historic heart of southern Tenerife, a former fishing village that has matured into a vibrant and bustling resort town while retaining a sense of tradition that its newer neighbours sometimes lack. Situated on a broad, south-facing bay protected by the Montaña Guaza, it offers a gentler and more authentic atmosphere than the neon-lit Playa de las Américas immediately to the west. The town is defined by its busy harbour — the primary departure point for ferries to La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro — and its two beautiful, sheltered beaches. With its pedestrianised old town streets, bustling markets, and excellent range of restaurants, Los Cristianos is a perennial favourite for long-stay winter visitors, families, and those seeking a well-rounded holiday destination with genuine character.

Beaches & nature

Los Cristianos boasts two primary beaches, both offering calm, shallow waters ideal for swimming. Playa de Los Cristianos is the town's original beach, a broad sweep of golden sand located right next to the harbour, where you can watch the fishing boats and ferries come and go. Playa de Las Vistas, situated just around the headland, is one of the largest and most popular beaches in southern Tenerife; its man-made crescent of fine sand is protected by breakwaters, creating a safe, lagoon-like environment for children. For nature enthusiasts, the Montaña Guaza is a protected natural area offering several hiking trails with spectacular panoramic views over the town and the Atlantic. The coastal waters are also famous for their resident pods of dolphins and pilot whales, with numerous ethical observation tours departing from the harbour daily.

Things to do

The Harbour of Los Cristianos is the town's focal point, offering a constant stream of activity and the starting point for various boat excursions, from glass-bottomed catamarans to deep-sea fishing trips. The town's pedestrianised centre is perfect for exploring, filled with independent shops, boutiques, and traditional Canarian plazas. Every Sunday, the Los Cristianos Market — one of the largest in Tenerife — draws crowds from across the south to its stalls selling everything from local crafts and clothing to fresh produce. For a change of pace, the Siam Park water park and Loro Parque animal embassy are both easily accessible via free shuttle buses. The coastal promenade provides a flat and scenic route for walking or cycling, stretching all the way to Costa Adeje and beyond, offering numerous viewpoints and sunbathing spots along the way.

Eating & nightlife

The dining scene in Los Cristianos is one of the most diverse in the south, reflecting its history and its international appeal. The harbour area and the old town streets are the places to find authentic Canarian cuisine, including fresh Atlantic fish, papas arrugadas with mojo, and traditional stews. The town also offers an incredible range of international options, from authentic Italian and Indian to British-style pubs and Spanish tapas bars. Nightlife in Los Cristianos is generally more relaxed and family-oriented than in the neighbouring resorts. The focus is on waterfront bar terraces, live music venues, and cozy pubs rather than high-energy clubs. The San Telmo area, overlooking Playa de Las Vistas, is a popular spot for evening drinks with its selection of stylish bars and restaurants offering sunset views.

Getting around

Los Cristianos is approximately 15 minutes from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) via the TF-1 motorway. The town is highly walkable, particularly around the pedestrianised centre and the long coastal promenade. The main Los Cristianos Bus Station (Parada Preferente) is a major hub for the island's TITSA bus network, providing direct and frequent services to Santa Cruz, Playa de las Américas, and Costa Adeje. Taxis are readily available at various ranks throughout the town. The harbour provides essential ferry links to the western islands of La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro, making it an ideal base for inter-island exploration.

When to go

Los Cristianos enjoys a year-round subtropical climate, with mild winters and warm, sunny summers. It is particularly popular in the winter months (November to March) for its exceptionally sheltered position, which keeps it warmer and less windy than the eastern resorts. Spring and autumn are excellent times to visit for those seeking warm weather with fewer crowds and more manageable temperatures for hiking the Montaña Guaza. July and August are the warmest months and are popular with both international and Spanish tourists. The town's traditional festivals, such as the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen in July, offer a fantastic opportunity to experience local Canarian culture and traditions.
