Holidays to Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife

Overview

Puerto de la Cruz is the historic heart of tourism in Tenerife, nestled in the lush Orotava Valley on the island's northern coast. Unlike the purpose-built resorts of the south, Puerto de la Cruz retains a distinct Canarian character, with cobblestone streets, colonial-style architecture, and a bustling fishing harbour. It was the first resort in the Canary Islands to welcome international travellers and remains a favourite for those seeking a more authentic experience. The town is defined by its dramatic volcanic landscape, where the deep blue of the Atlantic meets black sand beaches and tropical greenery. With the majestic Mount Teide providing a constant backdrop, Puerto de la Cruz offers a sophisticated blend of traditional charm and modern amenities, making it a unique destination in Tenerife.

Beaches & nature

The coastline of Puerto de la Cruz is a testament to the island's volcanic origins. Playa Jardín is the standout beach, a stunning stretch of fine black sand designed by the famous artist César Manrique, surrounded by lush botanical gardens and waterfalls. Further east, Playa Martiánez offers a more rugged experience, popular with surfers for its consistent waves. Nature enthusiasts will find themselves at the gateway to the Orotava Valley, a verdant region of pine forests and banana plantations. The town itself is home to the Jardín Botánico, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, featuring an extraordinary collection of tropical and subtropical plants. The proximity to the sea also allows for spectacular coastal walks, such as the trail to the secluded Playa de el Bollullo, often cited as one of the most beautiful wild beaches on the island.

Things to do

Puerto de la Cruz is packed with attractions that cater to all ages. Loro Parque, world-renowned as one of the best zoos and marine parks, is a must-visit, especially for families. For those who prefer swimming in calmer waters, the Lago Martiánez complex is a masterpiece of landscape architecture. This vast lido features emerald-green sea-filtered pools, volcanic stone sculptures, and palm-fringed terraces, also designed by César Manrique. Exploring the old town (La Ranilla) is a delight, with its street art, artisan shops, and the 17th-century Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia. For a panoramic view of the town and the coast, a visit to the Taoro Park gardens on the hill is highly recommended. The town also serves as an excellent base for visiting the historic city of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Eating & nightlife

The culinary scene in Puerto de la Cruz is a highlight, offering a rich tapestry of flavours from traditional "guachinches" to sophisticated fine dining. Fresh fish is the staple, with the daily catch from the harbour featuring prominently on menus in the Plaza del Charco and the old fishing quarter. Local specialities like conejo en salmorejo (rabbit in spicy sauce) and the ubiquitous papas arrugadas with mojo sauce are best enjoyed in the town's many courtyard restaurants. Nightlife here is more understated than in the south, focusing on atmosphere and local culture. The Plaza del Charco is the social heart of the town, perfect for an evening drink under the laurel trees. You'll find plenty of wine bars, jazz clubs, and venues offering live Canarian folk music, providing a relaxed and authentic evening experience.

Getting around

Puerto de la Cruz is well-connected to the rest of the island. It is about an hour's drive from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) and only 25 minutes from Tenerife North Airport (TFN). The TITSA bus network is excellent, with frequent "green buses" running to the capital Santa Cruz, the historic town of La Orotava, and even direct services to Mount Teide. Within the town, most attractions are within walking distance, although the terrain can be hilly in parts. A small tourist train connects the town centre with Loro Parque. For those looking to explore the rugged northern coast or the Anaga Rural Park, renting a car is a great option, though parking in the town centre can be challenging during peak hours.

When to go

Puerto de la Cruz enjoys a mild, subtropical climate throughout the year, though it is slightly cooler and more humid than the south of the island. This "microclimate" is what keeps the landscape so beautifully green. The summer months (June to September) are warm and sunny, ideal for enjoying the beaches and the Lago Martiánez pools. Winter (December to February) is popular with visitors from northern Europe, with temperatures remaining pleasant at around 18-20°C. For a truly unique experience, visit in February for the vibrant Carnival, which is celebrated with almost as much passion as in Santa Cruz. Spring and autumn are perfect for hikers and nature lovers, as the temperatures are ideal for exploring the surrounding valleys and mountains without the summer heat.
