Holidays to La Laguna

La Laguna in Tenerife

Overview

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, commonly known simply as La Laguna, is the cultural and spiritual heart of Tenerife. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, it was the island's first capital and remains its most beautiful historic city. Its grid-based street plan, which served as a model for many colonial cities in the Americas (including Havana and San Juan), is lined with elegant 16th to 18th-century mansions, hidden courtyards, and grand churches. As home to the oldest university in the Canary Islands, La Laguna has a vibrant, youthful energy that contrasts wonderfully with its venerable architecture. Located at a slightly higher altitude than Santa Cruz, it enjoys a cooler, fresher climate, making it a popular escape from the coastal heat.

Beaches & nature

While La Laguna itself is inland, its municipality stretches to the northern coast, where you'll find some of Tenerife's most dramatic natural scenery. The coastal villages of Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo are famous for their large natural seawater swimming pools, which allow for safe swimming even when the Atlantic is rough. To the northeast lies the entrance to the Anaga Rural Park, an ancient laurel forest that predates the last ice age. This area is a hiker's paradise, offering mist-covered peaks and winding trails that lead down to secluded coves. The city's surroundings are green and fertile, providing a stark contrast to the arid landscapes of the island's south.

Things to do

The best way to experience La Laguna is by wandering its pedestrianized historic core. Key landmarks include the Catedral de La Laguna, with its neoclassical facade, and the Iglesia de la Concepción, featuring an iconic stone bell tower that offers panoramic views of the city. The Museum of History and Anthropology (Casa Lercaro) provides deep insights into the island's past within a stunning 16th-century palace. For families and science fans, the Museum of Science and the Cosmos is an interactive and highly engaging destination. The Plaza del Adelantado is the city's central square, surrounded by important buildings like the Town Hall and the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena.

Eating & nightlife

La Laguna is renowned for its "tasca" culture — small, atmospheric taverns serving traditional Canarian tapas and local wines. The area around Calle Herradores and Calle San Agustín is packed with excellent eateries ranging from centuries-old pastry shops like La Pastelería Díaz to modern fusion restaurants. Thanks to the large student population, the nightlife is lively and authentic, particularly in the area known as "El Cuadrilátero", where dozens of bars and pubs cater to a young crowd. The vibe here is much more "Spanish" than in the southern resorts, with a focus on socializing over drinks and music rather than organized tourist entertainment.

Getting around

La Laguna is easily accessible from all parts of the island. It is connected to Santa Cruz by a modern and frequent tram line, which is the most convenient way to travel between the two cities. Tenerife North Airport (TFN) is located on the outskirts of the city, making it a perfect first or last stop on a trip. The TITSA bus station serves as a major hub for routes heading to the north and the Anaga mountains. Within the historic centre, almost everything is pedestrianized and flat, making it a joy to explore on foot. For those with a car, parking in the centre can be difficult, so it is often better to use the large public car parks on the periphery.

When to go

La Laguna's altitude means it is often several degrees cooler than the coast, and it can be prone to "la panza de burro" (the donkey's belly) — a layer of low-hanging clouds. The most exciting time to visit is in July for the Romería de San Benito Abad, a traditional harvest festival where locals dress in folk costumes and parade with decorated ox-carts. Holy Week (Semana Santa) is also a major event, featuring some of the most solemn and beautiful religious processions in Spain. For those who prefer warmer weather, late spring and early autumn are ideal. In winter, be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater, as the evenings can feel surprisingly brisk compared to the southern beaches.
