Holidays to Puerto Naos

Puerto Naos in La Palma

Overview

Puerto Naos is La Palma's main beach resort, a small but well-equipped tourist destination on the island's western coast that offers a genuine alternative to the mass-tourism resorts of Tenerife or Gran Canaria for visitors seeking natural beauty and authentic island character alongside comfortable beach facilities. The resort sits on a sheltered cove where the volcanic mountains drop steeply to the sea and a wide, dark-sand beach extends in both directions beneath impressive cliffs. The black volcanic sand is the natural colour of the beach — not a cosmetic choice — and combined with the brilliant blue of the Atlantic and the green forested slopes above, it creates a colour palette unlike any other resort in the islands. The eruption of the Tajogaite volcano in 2021 added new lava flows to the coast north of the resort, creating dramatic new landscape features that are still being integrated into the island's natural heritage.

Beaches & nature

The main beach at Puerto Naos is a broad expanse of black volcanic sand stretching for several hundred metres, with calm, warm water that is good for swimming throughout most of the year. The protected cove setting reduces wave action significantly compared to the exposed Atlantic coastline nearby. Natural rock pools at the northern end of the beach provide sheltered snorkelling areas with excellent underwater visibility. The volcanic landscape immediately behind and around the resort is dramatic: lava cliffs, banana terraces, and the forested slopes of the island's interior provide a stunning backdrop. The new lava delta created by the 2021 eruption to the north is an extraordinary geological feature now being opened to guided visits. The Los Canarios fishing village nearby and the wider volcanic landscape of the southwest coast are worth exploring on foot or by car.

Things to do

Diving is the premier activity at Puerto Naos: the clear waters offshore provide excellent conditions, with volcanic lava formations, underwater caves, and a rich variety of marine life. The dive centre based at the resort runs PADI courses and offers guided dives to sites ranging from shallow reefs for beginners to deeper walls for experienced divers. Whale and dolphin watching is reliable from the western coast; La Palma's deep-water channel hosts permanent populations of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, and excursions run regularly from the small harbour. The volcanic landscapes created by the 2021 eruption — accessible on guided tours — are one of the most extraordinary geological experiences in Europe. Hiking from Puerto Naos up into the banana plantations and higher to the pine forest provides unforgettable views. The commercial centre of Los Llanos de Aridane is 10 minutes away by car.

Eating & nightlife

Puerto Naos has a modest selection of restaurants, beach bars, and cafés that cover the basics well. Fresh fish is the standout choice, with the boats bringing in whatever the western Atlantic has provided. Vieja (parrotfish) with traditional mojo sauces, grilled tuna, and marinated goat's cheese are among the local flavours worth trying. The resort is small and quiet; evenings follow the beach-resort pattern of a promenade stroll, dinner, and an early night. For a wider variety of dining and evening entertainment, Los Llanos de Aridane is a short drive away.

Getting around

La Palma Airport (SPC) is approximately 25 kilometres north of Puerto Naos — a journey of around 30 minutes by car on the coastal road. Regular bus services connect the resort to Los Llanos de Aridane and to Santa Cruz de La Palma. Car hire is strongly recommended for exploring the western coast, the volcanic landscapes of the south, and the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. The resort itself is small enough to cover on foot.

When to go

Puerto Naos benefits from the western coast's sheltered microclimate, which is warmer and drier than the east coast. Summer is the most reliable season for beach days, with long sunny periods and warm sea. Winter brings occasional rain but is mild. The volcanic landscape around the resort is dramatic in all seasons — the 2021 lava flows are particularly striking in low winter light. Spring is ideal for hikers, when the forests are green and the temperatures perfect for walking. The resort is at its most lively from June to September and during the Christmas holiday period.
