Holidays to Valle Gran Rey
Valle Gran Rey in La Gomera
Overview
Valle Gran Rey is the most striking and most celebrated valley on La Gomera, a dramatic ravine that descends from the island's central highlands to the sea through layer upon layer of terraced banana plantations — one of the most extraordinary agricultural landscapes in the Canary Islands. The valley came to international attention in the 1960s and 1970s when it became a gathering point for European alternative communities — hippies, back-to-the-landers, and travellers who chose to make their lives in what was then an extraordinarily remote and beautiful place. This counter-cultural heritage has faded somewhat but its echo remains: the valley has an independent, artistic, and tolerant character that makes it unique among Canarian resorts. The main settlement, La Calera, perches on a ledge above the valley floor, while the harbour village of Vueltas and the beach area of La Playa provide the tourist infrastructure. The combination of dramatic landscape, warm winter sun, and an alternative atmosphere makes Valle Gran Rey perhaps the most distinctive destination in the entire archipelago.
Beaches & nature
The beach at Valle Gran Rey — or rather the series of small beaches that make up what is collectively known as La Playa — is a stretch of dark volcanic sand backed by banana plantation terraces and framed by the valley's dramatic walls. The swimming is good and the setting remarkable, with the valley's sheer sides rising on both flanks and the dark sand contrasting with the brilliant blue of the Atlantic. The smaller beach at Playa del Inglés, accessed via a short coastal walk north, is quieter and particularly beautiful. The underwater landscape offshore is excellent for snorkelling and diving, with clear water and volcanic formations. Above the beach, the valley climbs through banana terraces to the laurel forest of the Garajonay National Park at altitude — one of the most dramatic vertical landscape transitions anywhere in the islands.
Things to do
Hiking is the standout activity in Valle Gran Rey, with trails rising steeply from the coast through banana plantations and eventually into the cloud forest of Garajonay. The walk up to the Mirador de César Manrique — a viewpoint overlooking the entire valley from the upper rim — is one of the great hikes in the Canary Islands. Boat trips from the harbour at Vueltas offer whale and dolphin watching excursions and coastal tours; the deep waters off the western coast support exceptional cetacean populations. The alternative community has left a legacy of yoga centres, healing retreats, and holistic therapy centres that attract a certain type of visitor specifically. The local market, held in La Calera, offers artisan crafts, organic produce, and the island's distinctive products including almogrote and palm honey.
Eating & nightlife
Valle Gran Rey has a good restaurant scene that reflects the valley's cosmopolitan alternative character — organic cafés, vegetarian restaurants, and smoothie bars sit alongside traditional Gomeran fish restaurants and family-run tapas bars. The harbour at Vueltas has several seafood restaurants of good quality, particularly those serving freshly landed Atlantic fish. The local gastronomy — goat's cheese, palm honey, almogrote, and fresh fish — is excellent here as throughout La Gomera. The valley's alternative heritage is most visible in its cafés and bars, where international visitors mix with long-term residents in a notably relaxed social atmosphere. Evening entertainment is low-key by conventional resort standards but has genuine character: live music in the bars, informal social gatherings, and an atmosphere that is genuinely alternative rather than manufactured.
Getting around
Valle Gran Rey is approximately 50 kilometres from the island capital San Sebastián de La Gomera — a journey of around 50 minutes on the island's winding mountain roads. Regular bus services connect the valley to the capital, to Playa de Santiago, and to other island destinations. Car hire is available at the ferry port in San Sebastián; hiring a car allows exploration of the island's extraordinary interior. The journey from the capital to Valle Gran Rey by car is one of the most spectacular drives in the Canary Islands. Within the valley, a local bus service connects La Calera, Vueltas, and La Playa.
When to go
Valle Gran Rey enjoys a warm, sheltered microclimate on the island's southwest coast that makes it one of the sunniest spots on La Gomera year-round. The valley's position, sheltered from the northeast trade winds by the island's central ridge, ensures warmth even when the north of the island is cloudy. Winter (December to February) is prime season, when northern Europeans arrive in significant numbers seeking warm sunshine; the banana terraces are green, the sea is swimmable, and the valley has a cosy, international atmosphere. Summer is hot but rarely uncomfortably so. Spring and autumn are quiet, beautiful, and ideal for hiking.
