Holidays to Playa del Inglés

Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria

Overview

Playa del Inglés is the pulsating entertainment capital of Gran Canaria and one of the most energetic holiday resorts in the entire Canary Islands. Stretching east from the famous dunes of Maspalomas, it offers a broad, beautiful beach backed by a dense grid of hotels, shopping centres, bars, and restaurants that operate at full tilt for most of the year. The resort has been a popular British and German package-holiday destination since the 1970s and wears its mass-market identity with confidence, offering everything from cabaret shows and water parks to excellent watersports and — perhaps most famously — a thriving LGBTQ+ scene anchored around the legendary Yumbo Centre. This is not a place for peace and quiet, but for those seeking sun, fun, and a holiday that doesn't stop, Playa del Inglés delivers with gusto. The beach itself is superb — wide, sandy, and backed by the extraordinary dune reserve — and is reason enough to come even without everything else on offer.

Beaches & nature

The beach at Playa del Inglés is a continuation of the same extraordinary stretch that starts at Maspalomas, covering over 3 kilometres of broad golden sand. The water is generally safe for swimming, though the area does experience some wind in the afternoon hours due to the prevailing trade winds funnelled between the dunes. Water sports concessions are positioned along the beach at regular intervals, offering jet ski hire, parasailing, banana boat rides, and surf lessons. The eastern end of the beach at San Agustín is slightly more sheltered and popular with families. The world-famous Dunas de Maspalomas nature reserve begins at the western end of the beach, and a walk into the dunes — even just for 30 minutes — is one of the most memorable things to do in the south, with the sand landscape becoming progressively more remote the further you walk.

Things to do

The southern resort area is packed with activities. Holiday World amusement park in Playa del Inglés has a Ferris wheel, go-karts, bowling, and a full range of family entertainment. The Sioux City Wild West theme park at Barranco del Águila is an entertaining family day out. Go-karting, golf, climbing walls, and ziplines are available within a short drive. For shopping, the sprawling Kasbah, Anexo II, and Metro shopping centres in Playa del Inglés offer everything from souvenirs to fashion. The resort is also a useful base for excursions into the island's mountainous interior — day trips to Tejeda, Roque Nublo, and the Caldera de Bandama are all feasible from here. The Yumbo Centre by day is a shopping mall; by night it transforms into one of Europe's most vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife destinations.

Eating & nightlife

Playa del Inglés is not known for fine dining, but it covers every possible taste and budget across hundreds of restaurants, buffets, and beach bars. The main resort strip along Avenida de Tirajana and the various centros comerciales are lined with restaurants offering full English breakfasts, German beer gardens, Italian pizzerias, and Canarian seafood. For better-quality local cooking, the restaurants in the San Fernando neighbourhood — the residential heart of Playa del Inglés — serve excellent tapas at genuinely local prices. The Yumbo Centre is the beating heart of the south's nightlife: a four-storey shopping mall that becomes a labyrinth of bars, clubs, drag shows, and late-night restaurants after dark, with action continuing well past dawn every night of the week. Carnival time in February brings street parties and drag performances to rival any in the world.

Getting around

Playa del Inglés is well connected to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) by the frequent 66 bus service (around 30 minutes). Within the resort, the Yellow Bus tourist service connects all the major spots along the southern coast from Maspalomas to Puerto Rico. Taxis are abundant and affordable. The main bus station at Av. de Tirajana serves routes to Las Palmas (line 30, around 50 minutes) and across the island. Hired cars are not essential within the resort area but open up the interior highlands; the GC-1 motorway gives fast access north to Las Palmas and west to Puerto Rico. Electric scooter hire is available at various points across the resort.

When to go

Playa del Inglés operates at full capacity virtually year-round, but the busiest period is November through February when it fills with northern Europeans seeking winter sun. Carnival in February is the resort's biggest annual event and arguably the finest time to visit for those who enjoy festivities. Gran Canaria Pride in May is another major draw, transforming the Yumbo into one of Europe's most celebrated LGBTQ+ events. Summer (June–August) brings Spanish domestic visitors and the warmest sea temperatures. Autumn is a relatively calm and pleasant window for those who prefer to avoid the crowds while still enjoying warm weather. The resort genuinely has something to offer in every month.
